[ The bathroom is filled with steam, and it's not because of the water temperature. It's because of the guy standing in the shower, running the coldest water he can. But much of the water is evaporating when it hits his skin, and he stands with his head bent under the showerhead. His hair, at least, is soaked. But it fits his mood, leaning over like this, his hair obscuring his vision; his control hasn't been this bad in some time.
While standing here is mostly for his own comfort (even he gets overheated), he figures this place with its water and tile is the least likely area for him to accidentally set on fire.
He's pretty sure he was supposed to do something today, but most of his concentration is on breathing right and trying to be stone. ]
[ she's not entirely sure what really happened, it was all kind of a blur. one moment they were talking about something and the next they were arguing and suddenly, something exploded.
it's a good thing her powers were all water, managing to save the kitchen before the entire house caught on fire. they'd probably need another stove, but all in all, things could've been worse. that isn't to say that tia is blameless, and she knows she isn't. she's been trying to be more patient and less quick to anger, but she hasn't made much progress on that yet.
after cleaning everything up and making sure none of the other appliances were damaged, she musters up the courage to find jori, stopping in front of the bathroom door. after a moment's stalling, she finally knocks. ]
[ Stone. he quickly reminds himself when he hears Tia's knock, but honestly there's no surge of power or anger. Maybe he's just exhausted, maybe he's calmed down. Maybe it's just that he doesn't blame her for what happened, and whatever they were arguing about is forgotten after the crisis.
Jori turns the water off, half to hear and speak to her better, half as an experiment to see how it feels. But he makes no effort to move, just stands there, hair dripping. ]
Hey.
[ A brief pause while he swallows, steeling himself to ask the question he's dreading. ]
[ There's a longer pause as Jori, being Jori, considers the question. ]
I'm not injured. I'm tired, and my head hurts. [ His power had flared suddenly and dramatically, and he'd shut it down so fast that he's gotten a sort of reaction headache. ] I'm angry; I'm upset; I'm disappointed. I shouldn't be losing control and blowing up stoves.
And I'm sorry.
[ For what had happened. For leaving her with the clean up while he tried to regain complete control. For being big dumb Jori, with more power than sense. ]
[ she almost wants to roll her eyes when he lists off the things he's feeling, but her shoulders slacken a little when he apologizes. she should be the one saying that.
he's a big dumb baby, she already said it wasn't that bad. eventually, ]
[ He had just hopped in the shower without bothering to undress. He'd stripped his shirt off simply because he didn't like it clinging to him. So at least he's half decent. It's not like his pants are the most comfortable thing ever but those are harder to take off while standing. He pulls the shower curtain back, standing there awkwardly, not wanting to drip everywhere and unsure what else to do with himself. ]
[ she trusts him to let her know if he's decent or not, so she doesn't bother to hesitate when he gives her the go ahead. she takes in the sight of him standing in the shower awkwardly and tries not to laugh at him; he looks a little like a kicked puppy and it's kind of endearing.
she goes over to stand in front of him and grabs a towel along the way, lifting herself up on the toilet seat so they're the same height. she covers his head with the towel and ends up carefully drying his hair with it. ]
I'm sorry, [ she says, after a moment, still rubbing the towel through his hair. it's better this way, so he can't see the frustration and the embarrassment on her face. ] I shouldn't have gone off on you like that. I'm working on it.
[ He doesn't protest when she covers his head or when she starts working on his hair, accepting it without comment or apparent tension at her proximity. When he speaks, it's slightly muffled. ]
I know. It's not your fault. Or at least, not all your fault.
[ At the very least, he doesn't sound like he's being self-pitying. And he's not. He doesn't want her to blame herself for this. He's not going to foist all the responsibility on her again. ]
Maybe. But that doesn't mean I need to make things more difficult.
[ if she didn't lose her temper, if she wasn't so stubborn all the time, maybe they wouldn't have argued and he wouldn't have lost control. it's a work in progress, but she's trying.
she pushes the towel down over his head to hang around his neck, leaning forward to rest her forehead against his bare shoulder. ]
[ Carefully he brings up his hand and places it on the back of her head, turning his face briefly into her hair. It's the closest thing to a hug he can manage while trying not to make things more awkward given his current state. Even if she likes water more than he does, that doesn't mean she necessarily likes being damp. ]
I know. And if it does, we'll deal with it again. We persevere; that's what we do.
[ No matter what happens between them or to them, he has an unshakeable faith in that concept. From his childhood there was Mag and Tia, and they've been such an integral part of his life and the person he's become. They're a part of him, and for him it's such simple fact, as true and as undeniable as the tides. ]
If it happens a hundred more times, it's what we'll do.
[ she closes her eyes and brings her hands up to curl around his shoulders, tucking her face into the crook of his neck. she doesn't even mind that he's damp, he's warm enough that it doesn't matter in the end. ]
Okay.
[ she used to think it was naive of him to have that much faith in her, in them, but lately she's come to appreciate it. compared to when they first started, things have been a lot smoother in recent years and she has finally accepted the fact that they are capable of accomplishing so much more together. jori brings out the best in her, challenges her to strive for more. she's not sure what kind of person she'd be without him or mag in her life. ]
[ He smiles then and kisses the side of her head. She definitely has been working on her temper, and he knows and appreciates it. It's evident enough in the way she's not fighting him now.
He almost wants to say something big, something important. To tell her a little about what she means to him, about how important their work and partnership is. Or even I love you and everything will be okay. But he wonders if this isn't the time. They both seem a little shaky right now, and he's all about balance. Maybe it would be better to lighten the mood slightly. ]
...And maybe we can keep the whole stove thing a secret.
[ Though he's inviting her to laugh at him, he's also half serious. Who would be the worst to find out? His family or Mag? He really doesn't want to know the answer to that. ]
[ he kisses her head and she smiles against his skin, two parts relieved and one part pleased. she was worried he'd be more upset with her, but she keeps forgetting that although he has a tendency to let his anger flare out, he's just as quick to forgive. they've been partners for years and the fact that he's never left her says something. ]
[ He's got himself under control enough that he can let himself steam a little bit on purpose. Not literally, but at least it'll help his clothes dry a bit faster. He takes the towel from around his neck and quickly runs it over his arms and torso. ]
We'll see what it costs, then decide.
[ He pauses and looks at her with a small, almost guilty smile. ] I mean, we could get a slightly nicer one, maybe.
on the one hand, a new and nicer stove would be pricier. but on the other hand, he could probably make even better food with it. that's always a good thing. plus, business has been good, she's picked up a few modeling gigs on the side lately, so-- ]
[ That was... very easy. Almost suspiciously so. But Jori's too pleased with the thought to look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe he'll just work overtime. He'd probably rather have a stove sooner than a nicer stove later. He does not always want take out! ]
Thanks. Though, um. I'm gonna go change, okay?
[ Seriously this is taking too long and he doesn't want to risk his power flaring again. ]
[ but she doesn't move, brushing out her hair in front of the sink. because it's totally normal to be in the same room when your roommate/partner/boything (??) is changing. ]
