[And there it is. It doesn't take long for Peter to give him the look paired with some very desperate words, and Frank instantly knows what to do. There's another man from the company here tonight, asking him to cover his spot as he heads around the clusters of rich people talking about nothing, heading straight for Peter and his unwanted company.]

Sir - [he cuts in just as the woman began to reach out and touch Peter's arm, getting in her way to grip his shoulder instead.] Sorry to interrupt, but there's an issue with your car. They need you to verify some information.

[Frank's face is as stony and serious as ever but the gentle squeeze of Peter's shoulder promises him that this is a saving mission.] If you can come with me?

[ all the tension leaks out of peter's body the second frank appears next to him, the gentle squeeze of his shoulder providing more comfort than anything else. he has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep his smile from looking too relieved as he nods. ]

Yea-... I mean, yes. Yes, of course. [ the woman clearly looks a little displeased but peter honestly doesn't give a fuck, clasping her hand in both of his briefly as he thanks her for her time and company, and her generous donation to stark industries. frank whisks him away then, and it's not until the doors to the ballroom close that he finally lets himself breathe. ]

Thank you, [ he says gratefully, loosening the knot of his tie as they head to the elevators. this isn't his first corporate event, but he's still not completely accustomed to the kind of artful encasement that comes with wearing a suit. ] I thought I was gonna die back there.

[Easing him through the crowd and out of the ballroom is easy when people practically step out of Frank's way without him asking. He's broad and knows how to seem overbearing when need be, which is why he's so good at his job.

As well as genuinely caring about who he's protecting.

He doesn't break character until the doors to the elevator are closed and they're headed up, using his key card to access the roof. It's a long way up and finally he also relaxes, leaning against the wall nearby.]

I could tell. I hadn't seen you that uncomfortable since the Christmas party last year. [Frank offers him a smirk] I figured you could use some fresh air.

[ frank has always been good at what he does and peter appreciates it. even for the dirty work that him and tony keep under wraps; peter knows but he doesn't say anything. he can't understand the reasons behind it completely, but he knows they're necessary sometimes. doesn't mean he likes it.

peter makes a face when frank brings up the christmas party, covering his face with one hand. ]

Oh my god, can you stop reminding me about the Christmas party? [ he might be whining, sorry. ] I thought we promised not to talk about it ever again.

[ he actually doesn't even remember that much about it. except maybe getting drunker than he should and admitting things that he probably shouldn't have while drunk, letting frank escort him to the bathroom and, well. admittedly, the making out was nice from what he could remember, but that's about it. ]

[That reaction is all he needs to confirm the facts. Frank can't help but chuckle, crossing his arms. The numbers on the elevator tick away as they get closer to the top floor.]

Never. It's a highlight of last year.

[Bathroom makeouts included. His teasing is always out of fondness though, even if their relationship has taken quite the sharp turn.

The elevator finally slows and dings, leading them to a maintenance floor. Frank leads the way up another flight of stairs to the roof access, pushing the door open, only to be met with a strong gust of wind. The building is tall and they are very high up.]

Glad drunk me can still leave a good impression.

[ peter follows him up the stairs to the roof and immediately hunches behind frank when he opens the door, holding onto his jacket while he laughs, the sound carried off immediately by the wind. it seems frank was serious about getting him some fresh air.

it's slightly less windy once they step further onto the roof and peter makes his way to the edge, leaning against the banister as he takes a deep breath. his eyes are bright with the glow from the city lights when he turns to frank, looking more alive than he did at the party thirty-something floors below them. ]

You still haven't told me what you want for Christmas.

[They are high up but it's easier to get used to the wind the longer they remain. Peter boldly steps up near the wall of the ledge and Frank's instincts want to reach out and hold him back, but he refrains. Instead, fingers twitch at his sides and he comes up next to Peter, side-eying him. He looks handsome in his expensive suit, wind-tossled hair and all, smiling brilliantly.]

I don't need presents. [It's a typical answer and one followed by Frank pulling out a flask from his inside pocket, handing it casually to Peter. Something strong for the night.]

Sure, you don't. [ a typical answer that peter was expecting, taking the flask from him just as casually. he takes a sip, savoring the burn that goes down his throat to settle in his stomach, warm despite the brisk wind on the roof. ] But there has to be something you want, right?

[ frank has never given him the impression that he's big on materialism, but peter doesn't mean a literal present when he asked. frank works a lot, and if it took peter actually giving him a vacation as a gift to get him to take time for himself, he'd do it. ]

Come on, [ he turns around to lean back against the ledge, meeting frank's side-eye with a grin. ] You can tell me.

[Some could say Frank has the tendency to be a little bit of a bad influence on Peter, but the kid's grown up now, of legal drinking age, and can handle his own. It doesn't mean that Frank will stop protecting him though for as long as his guardian deems it fit. Besides, he's pretty sure Peter has never minded his company.

He shrugs and rubs the back of his neck at the further prodding, that smile getting to him and twisting out one of his own.]

I don't know. Just... knowing you're alright. This here is a better present than anything I could ask for. [Alone time with Peter. It doesn't happen that often anymore, does it?] I hardly ever see you anymore.

[ peter's smile softens to something more subdued and a little bittersweet. he'd been away at med school for a while, finally finishing up his last semester, and most of his free time during his breaks were taken up by appearances and conferences. he still sees frank often, but peter misses his younger years, when he could spend most of the day hanging out with him without being surrounded by others. ]

I know... I'm sorry. [ he shifts closer to frank, enough for their shoulders to bump. ] But you know I'll always find time for you, right?

[ he's still warm from the alcohol, loose and easy. but peter is fully conscious of it when he leans against frank, pressed against his side. he doesn't remember much of the christmas party, but he remembers how warm frank was, how safe he felt in his arms, and peter finds himself missing that the most. ]

[Frank is proud of him for coming into his own and figuring out what he wants to do at such a young age. Medicine is a bold field and he knows what kind of work Peter is inspired to pursue, and that in of itself is amazing. He is such a generous, caring young man despite having grown up around so much wealth and greed.

When Peter leans up against him Frank isn't afraid to loop his arm around his shoulders, bringing him closer. It's been a while since they've had any alone time but he knows what spark they've had remains, unabashed when he leans down to kiss Peter's temple.]

I know.

[Frank offers another small smile before taking the flask back for a drink of his own, sighing through his nose.]

Maybe I can convince Mr. Stark to let me come with you on your next trip.

[ his eyes close briefly when frank kisses his temple, snuggling into his hold partially because frank is warm but mostly because it's nice being pressed against him like this. peter has gotten a little taller since high school, finally coming up to frank's chin, and it doesn't take much effort anymore to lean up and press a few feather light kisses along his jaw.

he laughs at frank's sigh, shaking his head. ]

You know, I don't think he'd really mind. [ tony's always been invested in stark industries, putting all his time and money into it. peter knows tony cares about him, but at the end of the day, he's still a multi-billionaire and the ceo of a big company; neither of them are home very often these days. ] He'd probably feel a lot better about it if you came with me, anyway.

[ frank has always been a constant in his life. no matter how long he was away, he could always come home and count on frank to be there. ]

[It feels good having Peter at his side again, a warm, physical presence rather than words on a screen or a few calls throughout the year. Every time they get to be together after a long distance apart is too good to be true. Now that he's graduated with his degree, Frank wonders where the hell it'll take them. Realistically, Peter still has years of medical school, residency, and stress galore ahead of him. Frank selfishly wants to keep him to himself... or resign and choose to be with him as something more than a bodyguard.

But he can't.

Instead, he opts for accepting light kisses and rubbing his hand along Peter's arm to keep him warm. He sets the flask down so he can have both arms, pulling Peter into his chest for a straight-up hug.]

Hmm... maybe... probably. [he hums in thought, both arms wrapped around the smaller man, Frank peering down at him with a soft expression.] If I let you go, I'd probably never see you again. Only on major holidays.

[ frank pulls him in and peter goes willingly, slipping his arms beneath frank's jacket to wrap around his torso. he spends a moment savoring the warmth and the closeness, face tucked up against frank's neck, feeling his pulse against his cheek. whatever moments he's able to get with frank when he's away are special, but none of them compare to this. ]

Maybe. [ he looks up at frank and the soft expression on his face, biting his lip. something aches in his chest, as it often does whenever it's just the two of them away from the people and the spotlight. he wishes frank could just stay with him, where they could just live as two ordinary people, but he knows achieving something like that would be difficult. or impossible. ] I want to come back more often, though.

[ fingers splay along the dip in frank's spine, stroking low on his back to skim along the waistband of his pants almost absently. his voice is soft, just barely enough to be heard over the wind, but with them being this close, he knows frank can hear him anyway. ]

I miss you.

[There is something so pure and good about moments like this, just hanging out privately on a rooftop with no one else knowing where they are, clinging to one another freely. In a perfect world they wouldn't have to hide what they have but they are both private people and Peter is too often in the spotlight. There is also something taboo about their relationship, about the fact that Frank's known him since he was in the 5th grade, even if nothing happened until Peter was much, much older.

Besides, a part of him still finds it thrilling to run around behind the scenes with no one knowing but them. He likes seeing people approach Peter flirtatious and suggestive only for him to turn them down, knowing it's because he'd rather be with Frank. He liked visiting him in college and sneaking off to claim him as his own, even though he's well aware Peter could probably have whoever he wanted if he tried hard enough.

But these sweet moments are also so, so good. They calm Frank like nothing else can. Peter's touch at his back is innocent and warm, and he is instantly relaxing into it, dipping his head down to steal a kiss at the shell of Peter's ear.]

I miss you too. [He murmurs loud enough to be heard, one hand rubbing back and forth against Peter's back.] How long are you staying in New York?

[ frank's known him since he was in elementary school, has basically watched him grow from the scrawny boy he was when he first showed up at tony's, to the person he is today. and while many people may find it strange that peter would end up falling for him, he honestly can't think of any other person he'd want to be with more. frank has always been there for him when he needed it, and that's more than he can say about most people.

the sneaking around is just a bonus at this point. peter still remembers when frank surprised him by visiting his dorm out of the blue, spending a week with frank all to himself without worrying about their responsibilities. it was nice, and peter misses the easy intimacy that they can achieve whenever they're together. ]

Just finished finals last week, so I've got some time now. [ the kiss to his ear makes him smile and he turns his head just enough to catch frank's lips in a soft kiss. ] All yours for a few months, at least.

[Hearing that brings a huge smile on his face, bigger than anyone else gets to see. Peter's the only one with that privilege as well as the only one who makes him smile.]

All mine, huh? Not Mr. Stark's, or the company's, or Doctors Without Borders...

[He's teasing of course, leaning in to kiss Peter again just for the hell of it, just because he can.]

Yep, [ kissing frank is nice, but kissing frank when he's smiling is peter's favorite thing. ] You got me all to yourself.

[ it's only for a few months, but a few months is longer than what they usually have and peter takes what he can get. every moment he gets with frank is special, something he'd never trade for anything in the world, even if it's just the two of them canoodling on the roof. ]

So we should make the most of it, yeah?

Yeah. We should.

[Frank's fingers massage into Peter's lower back, up along his spine, feeling the warmth of his body through his clothes. Frank kisses Peter's jaw next, then his neck, sighing there against the cold wind.]

I probably should have taken you to the car but this is the first place I thought of. No one would follow us up here.
