[ Hope she doesn't mind screaming at him when he's bent in half just trying to get air into his lungs seriously aim for a shin or something next time this is really inconvenient and uncool.

Of course, it's worth it once his brain processes that the kick and the screaming don't mean that yes, he's fucked it all up and she hates him, but that she actually loves him too. This...does not make sense at all to him, not in any way, shape, or form, but he decides he can figure that part out later.

He looks up at her, intending to ask why she says that she hates him if she loves him instead, but the whole world freezes when he sees her crying. Pain, breathing, and questions can wait as he reaches out, cupping her face with one hand, thumb wiping away the tears as best he can, at least on that one side. ]

[she loses most of her steam by then - it's hard to talk when she keeps hiccuping, but eventually she manages to catch her breath.

and then she's stepping closer, hands gripping his clothes and hiding her face against his chest.]

[ His brow furrows - being Jori he actually looks up at the sky to double check, then shakes his head. ]

[ Wait, screams some ancient, prehistoric part of his brain. You know where this road goes.

Instead his arms go around her, cradling her to his chest. ]

[ She loves him. He should be happy. So why does it feel like his heart is breaking? ]

[she almost laughs when he corrects himself, and a part of her feels bad for kicking him. which is really the only part she really understands, because the other half is filled with all kinds of emotions like nervousness and happiness and apprehension and maybe a little panic thrown in.

but okay. she tilts her head up to look at him and takes a deep breath.]

[ Maybe it was the kick that jarred it, created just a few small cracks in that certainty. That lets reality slowly drip through to sensible, sane Jori. This was impossible, right? He was supposed to be the dumb one, falling in love like this. If she had rejected him, it would've hurt, but he would've gotten over it eventually and they would've continued to work together, with her probably holding it over his head every so often.

But she loves him too. Could they? Should they? Is it really alright, when she ends up crying in his arms like that? Hope can be such a small and fragile thing. ]

I didn't know I'd be either. [it's a little weird, telling him about her thoughts without trying to be defensive.] I don't even know why you love me, I've always been such a... bitch to you. You should at least be annoyed with me.

[she doesn't know what to make of everything still. how their relationship will change, if they could even handle the change. it's frightening and exciting, and she doesn't know how to deal with it.]

[ Now he smiles, shaking his head slightly. ] But I couldn't be. You're my best friend and we're partners, kind of, and I know you don't always mean the things you say, even if it's confusing.

[ Really, though, she should know better than to ask something like that. He considers this thoughtfully for a second, then scoops her up into his arms - and he would apologize for always picking her up except the height difference is kinda a pain sometimes - in order to nuzzle her neck the same way he would his favorite little sister. Which means it's not exactly the most romantic of things but it's simple and affectionate, completely genuine if a bit silly because that's probably not the way she intended the question. ]

[if she was intending anything, this was probably not something she expected. it's a little weird for her at first (her family did show affection through different levels of violence, after all) and she squirms a bit, biting down the urge to laugh. still, Jori is warm and it's comfortable, so she ends up sort of hiding her face in his hair and breathing him in.]

[ Perhaps fortunately for her, it doesn't last long before he sets her back down. But that's calmed him, centered him; it was familiar and comforting, and if his smile is slightly goofy, well... he's Jori, after all. But for now he'll accept that he's slow, and just enjoy the moment. Worry about the rest later, when there aren't such other wonderfully distracting things demanding his attention, like the way she feels in his arms. ]
